Where Would You Hide?THE FUSSELL HOUSE, (also known as "The Pines") located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania was a stop on the Underground Railroad. On their journey North to freedom, runaway slaves could find safety, food, clothing, friendship and a place to hide in this house. At 190 years old, the Fussell House has withstood the intrusion of slave catchers, the natural elements, changing times and various owners.
Unfortunately, it may not survive the onslaught of commercial development now happening around it. Since coming under new ownership in 2006-07, the house and surrounding 3 acres have undergone dramatic changes (see here.) A Marriott Hotel has been erected adjacent to the house with the construction of two other commercial buildings planned for the future. For a brief period the house was being rented as an office building but it now stands unused and in serious need of repairs. Today, the Fussell House sits neglected and in danger of being lost. Anyone can see observing the building that it’s not being properly maintained. I can only assume that current owners are not concerned with the health of the structure. I wonder if they are letting it fall into disrepair so they can justify demolishing it? I hope this isn’t the case but looking at this once beautiful home so neglected, one is left wondering what’s going to happen to it.
